Trump's Regime of Consequences and Incentives

The ex-president's voracious desire for retribution has rapidly evolved into a methodical framework. Within the year since his election, the president's anger and caprices have adopted the guise of official policies in a manner analogous to historical repressive governments. Justice department officials who fail to comply are immediately removed and substituted by supporters. Critical figures who question him encounter legal action, judicial process and punishment. Critics have been labeled under presidential memoranda as “unpatriotic”, “against faith communities” and “opposing economic freedom”, and threatened with criminal charges as “terrorists”.

Federal Agencies Transformed

Every instance involving legal action of critics and leniency for his allies exhibits its own particular features. But, regardless of their specific form, they embody expressions of what has arisen as a deliberate method. Such events are far from coincidental. Trump's purge of federal lawyers and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, alongside his placement of loyalists in senior posts, commenced rapidly, quickly took on a regularity, and has now been shaped into a structure. Federal prosecutors and the law enforcement agency have been transformed into partisan organizations under his explicit command to carry out his directives. Unfairness has been made routine. This is the retribution system.

Leadership is more concerned with punishing the chief's alleged opponents than they are with safeguarding our public welfare.

Within the Structure

The origin of this framework has been uncovered in the court filing of several previous senior FBI agents submitted in late summer in the judicial system in the capital against agency head a senior appointee and top lawyer Pam Bondi for illegal termination in “a effort of payback against Plaintiffs for what administration figures judged to be a refusal to exhibit adequate political loyalty”. In the complaint that a former acting director, the previous acting FBI director, describes a discussion in which he “publicly acknowledged the unlawfulness of his conduct”.

Driscoll had tried to shield FBI agents from being dismissed, the complaint states. Patel informed him that “White House figures” – understood by him to be the executive branch and justice department – had ordered him to remove everyone who they identified as having worked on a law enforcement case against the president. The complaint adds: “He clarified that he had to terminate the people his superiors told him to remove, because his capacity to keep his own position depended on the removal of the personnel who worked on cases involving the President. He commented that there was no option he or the official could do to stop these or any other firings, because ‘the FBI attempted to put the President in prison and he remembers.’” When he informed Patel he was violating the FBI's own internal rules, he reportedly said “he understood that and he knew the nature of the summary firings were probably illegal”.

Widespread Impact

After Patel's claimed confession to Driscoll, the justice department and the Federal Bureau have been gutted and reorganized for Trump's revenge apparatus. Several of the FBI's top officials were terminated or pushed out in the initial period of the administration. Approximately numerous lawyers at the justice department have accepted a “deferred resignation program”. No fewer than several federal prosecutors, such as those in the New York office, quit in protest over what they considered as ideological pressure in withdrawing the corruption case against the city leader, a political figure, in exchange for his collaboration with his ICE detentions of migrants. The public integrity section of DoJ, which handles ethical violations, has been diminished to a handful of lawyers. The civil rights division has been devastated: seventy percent of its staff has resigned. One-third of executives at the department have resigned. The division upholding ecological regulations has experienced the exit of a majority its management.

Rewards and Punishments

Concerning the legal matter, the temporary lawyer for the federal division, Danielle Sassoon, resigned in protest against what she described as the “exchange”. A key figure, the president's “enforcement chief,” was present as the implementer with him on television to declare: “Should he fail to deliver, I'll reappear in the city.”. Additionally, a former official, formerly the acting deputy attorney general and a ex-lawyer, who negotiated the deal, was awarded an appellate federal judgeship, a likely stepping stone to the highest court.

Trump's protection for crimes perpetrated while in office, granted by the unprecedented decision of the GOP-led on the highest court, thus thwarting his legal action over the January 6 insurrection and preserving his public standing for the presidential race, is the cornerstone on which he stands to defend his supporters. Given this protection, he has been liberated to enable wrongdoing. The effect of the judicial ruling infuses his administration and the Republican Party completely. The legal case has escalated. Similar to the former president's administration lawyer the figure said about the Watergate
