The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
