The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
